I know there’s a few of you here who are interested in the SS United States and what is being done to preserve her legacy. She’s currently owned by a Conservancy headed by William Francis Gibb’s granddaughter, and they have been searching for an industry partner to help the revitalize and restore the ship.

I work for the firm that designed her (Gibbs & Cox, Inc.) and I can tell you that on our end, we have a huge interest in seeing the ship preserved. We have done quite a bit of work with the conservancy over the years, including a recent 3D laser scan of the main decks. If you’re an industry insider, we were showing off footage of this at the recent Surface Naval Association annual symposium, and will likely be showing it again at Sea, Air, and Space Expo.

There’s been a lot of stuff in the works that I haven’t been able to talk about, but it’s in the news now so I can go ahead and say it - we’re saving the ship!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

After languishing pier side for 20 years in Philadelphia, the great ship is going to be moved to a new, yet to be disclosed location and refit as a multi-use water side attraction. Where is she going? You’ll have to wait until the news conference next week to find out.

I saw that. I feel like we’ve been here before, but it sounds really serious this time, so I’m optimistic. As much as I would have liked the ship to stay in Philadelphia, New York is a much better location. I still wonder how much better things would have worked out for the Queen Mary if New York had won the bidding instead of Long Beach.

Awesome that people at Gibbs & Cox still have an affection for their handiwork from 60+ years ago. My interest in the ship was sparked by a marine festival in Philadelphia back in the ‘90s, where Gibbs & Cox had an information booth set up giving out business cards and some souvenirs (reprinted United States Lines passenger lists and menus, IIRC). One of the finest achievements in maritime engineering ever, can’t think of a better advertisement for the firm.

This time is different. It’s going to be good. Frankly I don’t even know many details so I’m just as excited to hear about it on Thursday, although I probably won’t right away because I’m up working in the yard at Bath Iron Works this week.
